X-ray examinationis an important tool that helps dentists to diagnose, plan treatments and monitor both treatments and lesion development. There are several types of dental radiological procedures, including:
Panoramic Radiography (OPG)
Cephalometric radiography
Cone-beam CT (CBCT)
OPG, otherwise known as panorex or orthopantomogram, is a full mouth panoramic scan dental x-ray of the lower and upper jaws.
A cephelometric X-ray, also simply known as a CEPH, is a diagnostic radiograph used primarily for orthodontic treatment planning and is taken during the orthodontic records appointment.
Cone-Beam Computed Tomography Systems (CBCT)
CBCT is the most advanced technique in dental imaging. The CBCT system rotates around the patient, capturing data by using a cone-shaped X-ray beam. These data are used to reconstruct a 3D image of the following regions of the patient’s anatomy: dental (teeth), oral and maxillofacial region (mouth, jaw and neck) and ears, nose and throat (ENT). Clinical applications includes dental implant planning, visualization of abnormal teeth, evaluation of the jaws and face, cleft palate assessment, diagnosis of dental caries (cavities), endodontic (root canal) diagnosis, and diagnosis of dental trauma.
